This isn't a typical piece of news for this site, but
Roger Ebert, the most relevant film critic
ever, voluntarily left his show for good this week, after not appearing for 2 years due to a surgical procedure mishap that
stole his voice. The day before he left,
Richard Roeper did the same, though his departure was more a contractual one where no new agreement could be reached.
Roeper plans to find a new outlet that allows him to continue eight years after replacing the late great Gene Siskel, and Ebert continues for now by keeping up his written reviews for both paper and online publishing. Thus, neither of them are "gone," but their show will be after 33 years of production. Will there ever be such a powerful medium for reviews again, lacking all else but their thumbs?
